Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 41.4 degrees.
Today is the first day of Spring and it is going to be sunny with a high temperature rising to the middle 60’s and a low tonight in the upper 30’s to low 40’s. Monday will be sunny and much warmer, with a high in the low 70’s and a low in the middle 40’s. Spring is starting out very nice.
Little River is flowing at 531 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.47 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 368 cfs. The water temperature is 51.1 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains have continued to recede to near normal, with some flowing slightly below normal for this date. Normal in March is fairly high.
Water temperatures are falling right now, though still within the trout’s preferred range in the low elevations. They may fall further before warming later today. Fishing could be slow early but improve as the streams begin to warm again later. You may want to fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer.
Weighted nymph rigs will likely work best early today. Dry and wet flies will likely produce strikes later. I would definitely have Parachute Adams dry flies in my box in sizes #12 through #16. Good nymph patterns include Pheasant Tail and Hare’s Ear. A dark wet fly emerger (unweighted) is a good choice as a dropper behind your dry fly. Trout may refuse your dry fly but take the emerger wet fly.
Many lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are stocked with trout. Fishing will be good today, especially after the streams begin to warm. Sub-surface flies will probably work best.
I checked the generation schedules at several dams and found pauses. TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at some dams. At a few, there are breaks. Some pauses are early while others should occur this afternoon. You might be able to work with some of these schedules. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater options you have today.
I re-arranged the thread wall in the fly tying department this week. Instead of displaying the thread by brand, they are now displayed by size, Heavy, Medium and Light from left to right. I have always found that new fly tyers are confused by the thread sizes. Believe me, we are were confused by that at first.
I also wrote and printed a “Thread Selection Guide” to help with the confusion. Pick one up and take it home with you and it will help.
In doing this, I also made space for some threads we have not stocked before. These threads are available in 6/0 and 8/0. They are made by Semperfli, a company based in the UK. They each come in 33 beautiful colors and I bought each color in both sizes.
This shipment arrived at the shop yesterday and I will be packaging and displaying the spools today. Additionally, I bought some Dirty Nymph Yarn and Perdigon Tinsel from Semperfly. I hope to get everything packaged and displayed by the end of the day. If we are busy in the fly tying department, and I am helping customers, it may not get it done until tomorrow.
We are busy at the shop as you can imagine. Spring fishing has begun (again) in the Smokies.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
