Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 33.4 degrees.
It is colder this morning than was predicted yesterday. It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 70’s, dropping to the upper 40’s tonight. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high in the middle 70’s and a low in the middle to upper 50’s tomorrow night. Rain will move into the area tomorrow night and continue through Wednesday morning.
Little River is flowing at 387 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.38 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 398 cfs. The water temperature is 48.4 degrees and falling this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing at normal or below normal. Water temperatures are falling this morning.
If you go fishing today, wait a while until the water warms. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. I talked to three anglers yesterday who fished in the Middle Prong drainage. Evidently they went early and returned in the early afternoon. They reported slow fishing and I could tell they were good fishermen. We all agreed fishing would have been better later in the afternoon.
When I write this fishing report, the numbers I gather are a snapshot at about 4:30 am. Like today, sometimes the water temperatures are falling to below the trout’s preferred range. It takes a while for the water to warm and for fishing to improve.
Nymphs will work best early. Dry flies and wet flies should work better later today after the trout become more active after the overnight chill.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout is good. If you are fishing today in these stocked streams, go later. Sub-surface flies will work best for you.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at some dams. There are others where they will not be generating or there are pauses at times. Check the schedules on the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options are available for you today. Hopefully you can squeeze in some tailwater fishing today.
A lot of professional fly fishing guides shop at our store. They visit us to shop in the fly tying department. I learn from the guides and enjoy being around them. I talked to at least three guides from Blackberry Farm this weekend. They are all nice guys and they are very serious, skilled and avid anglers and tyers. Blackberry Farm has an excellent guiding staff.
We have and enjoy another group of angling customers who frequent the fly tying department. They are the crappie fishermen. These men and women tie crappie jigs. Working with them takes me back to my youth, when I fished for crappie using small jigs. That is a lot of fun.
I try to stock what they need to tie their jigs. Some of you may wonder why we have such a large selection of calf tails in many colors. They are there for our crappie fishing customers. Calf tails make great crappie jigs.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
