Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 44.6 degrees.
It will be partly sunny and breezy today with a high temperature in the middle 70’s. It will be very warm tonight, with a low in the upper 50’s. Rain will move into the Tennessee River Valley after midnight. There is the potential for heavy rain. Thunderstorms are possible. Rain will continue tomorrow morning. It will be windy.
Little River is flowing at 350 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.30 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 385 cfs. The water temperature is 50.5 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal. Normal in March is fairly high. Oconaluftee River is flowing quite a bit below normal.
It was warm yesterday, but the streams were cold early. I talked to several anglers yesterday and got mixed reports. A lot of bugs were hatching. But none caught a lot of trout. Most trout were caught on nymphs, not dry flies. One young man caught two nice browns on a streamer. Fishing yesterday was not as good as most people hoped it would be. Those who fished late yesterday may have done better.
Today, the streams will be starting out warmer. Fishing should be better today. It may be windy at times which does not help.
If you plan to fish in the mountains today, start in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Be ready with nymphs, dry flies and wet flies. I would have Parachute Adams dry flies in my box, in sizes #12 to #16. Most reasonable nymph and wet fly patterns should work. Try Pheasant Tail and Hare’s Ear nymphs. A Quill Gordon wet fly (unweighted) trailed behind your dry fly is a good tactic.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers should be good today though wind may be an issue. Sub-surface flies will probably work best for you.
There are pauses in the generation scheduled at a handful of dams today. TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at others. Check the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you might have.
This is Spring Break in many areas. We have been busy at the shop. More people are fly fishing now that Spring has arrived in the south. We are seeing visitors from the north and the south.
I am covered up processing fly tying material and tool orders. Another big one is coming today. Everyone else is busy taking care of customers, our number one priority.
We have a new team member. His name is Joel. Joel is a nice guy. He has been a customer for many years.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
