Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 45.1 degrees.
Yesterday was kind of a nasty fishing day. It rained some, but the worst condition was the wind. In Townsend we got .34 inches of rain.
It will be sunny today, with a high temperature in the middle 60’s, falling to around 40 degrees tonight. A cold front will move in tomorrow. Expect a high in the middle 50’s with a low Friday night in the middle to upper 30’s. Saturday could begin with light snow, especially in the higher elevations. The high temperature is predicted to be in the low 50’s, falling to near the freezing mark Saturday night. Sunday will be sunny with a high in the middle 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 452 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.51 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 386 cfs. The water temperature is 54.7 degrees and falling.
Stream levels rose somewhat yesterday. The water has receded but flows are higher than they have been during the last five days. Water temperatures are falling.
If you go fishing today, you may want to wait until later if you have a choice. That will allow for the water temperatures to bottom out and begin to rise. Fishing will be best later today. Nymphs will work for sure. Dry flies and wet flies may work too.
The same is true if you plan to fish for stocked trout in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains. Go later when fishing will be better. Sub-surface flies will likely work best for you.
Tailwater anglers may have a few choices today, where at some dams long breaks in the generation are planned. I noticed some possibilities at Cherokee, Wilbur, South Holston and Chatuge dams. TVA and the Corps plan to generate all day at other dams I checked this morning. Visit the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you may have. You could have more if you are boating.
If you are planning a fishing trip here this weekend, be aware that water temperatures may fall below the trout’s preferred range. I hate it when people arrive expecting good fishing, to find fishing is slow. We are in a volatile early Spring transition period. The streams are warm some days and fishing is good. Then, a cold front moves in and fishing becomes slow again.
I started reporting on this page many years ago, every day, to make people aware of the current fishing conditions, while trying to predict what it looks like a few days out. Sometimes I am right and other times I am wrong. Our sport is weather dependent. Fishing could be good this weekend.
I do try to give you my honest opinion and readers appreciate it. I hear that often.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
