Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:03 am, the temperature is 46.8 degrees.
It is ten degrees warmer this morning than was predicted yesterday morning.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 50’s, dropping to the upper 20’s tonight. Sunday will be sunny with a high in the low to middle 50’s falling to the upper 20’s to low 30’s at night. Monday will be warmer, Tuesday will be much warmer, and the high temperature Wednesday may reach the low 80’s.
Little River is flowing at 359 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.32 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 348 cfs. The water temperature is 47.1 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing close to normal, some slightly higher and other lower. Water temperatures are chilly. The water temperature at the low elevation gauge site on Little River started the morning at 50 degrees yesterday but fell through the day into the upper 40’s and did not recover.
I talked to guide Pat Tulley yesterday. He hiked up Lynn Camp Prong, which is a mid-elevation stream. He said the water was cold but he did not take the temperature. He also reported good fishing for brook trout, and he caught them on dry flies.
It will be sunny today so the streams should warm some. Fishing will be best later today. Nymphs will work for you and maybe dry flies will too.
Lowland river fishing should be fair to good for stocked trout, especially later today. Use nymphs, squirmy wormies, mop flies, or small streamers.
There are finally going to be long pauses in the generation schedules a many dams today. I saw two generation schedules with no generation planned. You have some tailwater fishing options available today if you are wading or boating. This is good news. Maybe the water levels in the impoundments have been lowered to the target elevations for this time of the year. Maybe this will be the beginning of a good trend for tailwater anglers. I hope so.
Check the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with the generation schedule on your favorite tailwater.
Yesterday, I finished displaying some new fly tying materials I bought from Semperfli. I will be adding more of their materials in the future. Right now, we have Perdigon Body material which is like nothing I have seen before. I bought several colors and if this material sells well, I will add more colors.
We are also stocking several colors of Semperfli Dirty Bug Yarn. It is an easy to use dubbing body substitute that is very realistic looking. You can find that on the dubbing wall in the fly tying department upstairs.
Additionally, two sizes of Classic Waxed Thread from the company is ready for you to try in sizes 6/0 and 8/0. This thread is available in 33 colors of each size and the colors are awesome.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
