Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 65.8 degrees.
It is windy. We are under a wind advisory in the foothills and a wind warning in the mountains through the day and tonight. Todays high temperature could reach 80 degrees, dropping to the middle 50’s tonight. Showers and the possibility of thunderstorms are predicted tomorrow, with a high in the middle 70’s and a low in the low 40’s.It will be sunny Friday with a high in the low 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 267 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.10 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 373 cfs. The water temperature is 48.0 degrees this morning and steady.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing below normal and at good fishing levels. Water temperatures will rise today and that trend will continue over the next two days. Fishing will improve.
Wind will be your issue today. Gusts to 55 miles per hour in the foothills and up to 85 miles per hour in the mountains are possible. I would not want to be in the forest under these conditions. Sometimes the high winds subside after I write this report and it turns out to be a good fishing day. That may or may not happen today.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout has been good and it will improve as the streams warm further. Nymphs and Squirmy Worms are working well. If you are fishing stocked streams and not doing well, switch to bead head midges drifted under strike indicators. I learned this trick from Travis Williams, who manages the trout program in Gatlinburg. Travis also works as a guide with David Knapp and Pat Tully at Trout Zone Anglers. Read about these guys by CLICKING HERE.
There are a long breaks planned in the generation schedule at a few dams today. You may have some tailwater fishing opportunities. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
Tic Smith was in the shop yesterday shopping for fly tying materials. Tic is a well respected seasoned guide, who has been floating clients down the tailwaters in our region for a long time. He is known for his knowledge of the Hiwassee River though he works on other rivers too. Tic is a guy anyone would enjoy spending the day with.
Tic can be booked through Southeastern Anglers. CLICK HERE to visit their website.
He told me about a USGS site on the Hiwassee that has a water temperature probe and transmits those important data. You can access the temperature in the Hiwassee River by CLICKING HERE. The site is located downstream from Reliance.
This can be a useful tool for those who fly fish on the beautiful Hiwassee River.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
