Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 47.3 degrees.
It will be cloudy this morning before clearing later. The high temperature will be in the upper 50’s, dropping to the middle 30’s tonight. It will be partly cloudy tomorrow and warmer, with a high in the middle 60’s and a low in the low 40’s. Sunday will be sunny with a high in the middle 60’s and a low in the upper 30’s.
Little River is flowing at 260 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.08 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 395 cfs. The water temperature is 54.1 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing lower than normal after a brief rise yesterday. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range.
Roads in the National Park that were closed due to high winds have re-opened. Fishing is good. Trout are taking nymphs, dry flies and wet flies. There are a lot of different species of aquatic insects on the water at times. A Parachute Adams in sizes #12 to #16 is a good dry fly choice. A bead head Pheasant Tail nymph is another good choice.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout is good. Nymphs, squirmy worms, mop flies, bead head midges and small streamers are all good fly choices.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at some dams today, offering tailwater angling opportunities. Check out the flows at Cherokee, Norris, Wilbur, South Holston and Chatuge dams. There may be others.
Wildfires are being fought by many local, state and federal agencies and departments. According to the news this morning, the Wears Valley Fire, which reached an area of 3,700 acres yesterday is now 45% contained. A smaller 800 acre fire near Seymour is 0% contained. An Army Blackhawk helicopter lost power and had to make an emergency landing in Wears Valley yesterday on a soccer field. No personnel were injured.
Wears Valley road was closed yesterday and may be closed today.
The Thomas Divide Complex Fire has remained 80% contained. This fire is actually two fires burning in Great Smoky Mountains National Park between Deep Creek and Newfound Gap Road. Many backcountry sites and trails in this area are closed.
Another small fire located on Newfound Gap Road was quickly extinguished yesterday afternoon. This fire was human caused but only burned about ½ acre.
Crews were finally allowed into Wears Valley to restore internet service which was down at several businesses and homes in Townsend and other locations. Our internet service was restored at the shop early yesterday afternoon.
What we need is rain. What we don’t need is more wind. The first chance I see for significant rain in the forecast will be Tuesday. The weather forecast indicates we have the potential for heavy rainfall. Bring it on!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
