Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:47 am, the temperature is 30.4 degrees.
It will be partly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low to middle 60’s, dropping to the low 40’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the middle 60’s and a low in the upper 30’s. Monday will be sunny and warmer with a high in the middle 70’s. Rain will move into the area Tuesday.
Little River is flowing at 232 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.00 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 357 cfs. The water temperature is 48.9 degrees and falling.
All streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal. Water temperatures are chilly this morning.
If you go fishing in the Smokies, start in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Fishing will be better later today. I would start with nymphs due to the colder water. You may catch trout with dry flies and wet flies later. I talked to a guide yesterday evening at the shop. He reported heavy hatches of aquatic insects but told me trout were not feeding on the surface where he and his clients were fishing. They caught trout on nymphs.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout is good. Fishing will be better today after the water temperatures bottom out and begin to rise. Sub-surface flies will work best. Try nymphs, squirmy worms, mop flies, bead head midges and small streamers to figure out what they are interested in.
Tailwater trout anglers have many choices today. There are breaks in the generation schedules at several dams at different times. Check the TVA website to see what your options are. Look at Cherokee, Norris, Wilbur, South Holston, Chatuge and other dams.
Tailwater fishing conditions are improving, finally.
The fire on the North Carolina side of the Smokies is contained but not totally suppressed. This fire is known as the Thomas Divide Complex Fire. Many trails and backcountry camping sites in the area have been closed but many have now re-opened.
The large Wears Valley Fire was 85% contained yesterday. According to the WBIR website, crews are in “control and mop-up status”. This fire grew to 3,700 acres. Sadly, many homes, businesses and rental cabins were lost to the fire.
The smaller Seymour wildfire is estimated to be 25% contained.
