Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 32.4 degrees.
Today will be sunny and warm, with a high in the low to middle 70’s and a low tonight in the upper 40’s. Showers will move in tomorrow and last through the night. It may be windy. Expect a high in the upper 60’s with a low in the low 50’s tomorrow night.
More rain is expected Wednesday and through the night with the potential for severe thunderstorms. It will be very warm with daytime temperatures reaching 80 degrees, dropping to around 50 degrees at night.
Little River is flowing at 209 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.93 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 382 cfs. The water temperature is 49.3 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing lower than normal. Water temperatures are chilly now, but will warm today.
Fishing in the mountains will be best later today. Start in the low elevations. Nymphs, dry flies and wet fly emergers will work for you. Nymphs may work best early. With the low water conditions we have now, stealth is paramount to your success. Dress to blend with the forest. Fish the broken water.
There are a lot of different species of aquatic insects on the water. If you see trout feeding on the surface, try to choose dry flies that mimic the adult insects you see.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers is good. Fishing will be best later today. Sub-surface flies will work best. Nymphs, squirmy worms, mop flies and small streamers will work. Bead head midges may be a good choice too. If you are Euro nymphing you should do well.
Smallmouth bass fishing in the lowland rivers will improve as the streams warm over the next few days. I would use nymphs and streamers.
Tailwater anglers have many choices today. TVA and the Corps have scheduled long pauses in the generation at some dams, especially this afternoon. They will not be generating at a couple of dams all day, though you may find light sluicing or spilling at some. Check out the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
I have been ordering and stocking Semperfli fly tying materials in phases. So far, we are stocking classic tying threads, dirty bug yarn to use instead of dubbing, tinsels, and Perdigon body materials. There will be more coming soon.
Will and I have begun adding these materials to our online store. Yesterday we launched 6/0 and 8/0 classic waxed threads, in 33 colors each.
You can see these threads by CLICKING HERE on the “Recent Arrivals” page. Click on one of the threads and look at all of those colors! You will need to click through the photography to see every color. Watch the video. There has been a trend among fly tyers toward brighter colors that reflect light and attract fish. These threads fill the bill.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
