Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 47.5 degrees.
Today will be overcast with a high temperature around 70 degrees and a low tonight in the low 50’s. Rain and possibly thunderstorms are in the forecast today. There is the potential for heavy rain. It will be windy, especially in the mountains. Rain is likely tonight. The chance for rain is high this afternoon and through the night.
It will be mostly sunny tomorrow with a high temperature in the low 80’s, falling to the upper 40’s tomorrow night. Showers and thunderstorms are likely overnight.
Little River is flowing at 199 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.90 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 353 cfs. The water temperature is 51.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing low. Water temperatures are ideal in the low elevations.
If you go fishing today, fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Trout will be taking nymphs, dry flies and wet flies. It may be windy. There is a chance you may encounter rising and stained water, especially later today.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout is good. Try nymphs, squirmy worms, mop flies, small streamers or bead head midges.
Fishing for smallmouth bass may be good in the lower reaches of the rivers where the water is warmer. Nymphs and streamers will probably work better than top water flies. When the rivers warm further, top water fishing for smallies will improve.
The turbines will be turned off with fairly long pauses at several dams today. Tailwater anglers have many choices today. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what options you have.
I have not heard anything about the white bass Spring spawning run. It is certainly time for that to happen or at least they are staging for the run up the rivers. If you time it right, you can have a great time catching these feisty fish in big numbers. Small white Clouser Minnows are a good fly choice.
I grew up in central Kentucky. When I was a kid, in the 1950’s and early 60’s, there was a white bass run like none I have ever seen. The bass would swim from Herrington Lake up Dix River to spawn. Anglers would line the banks, hooking or catching white bass on almost every cast. It was crazy. That spawn may still be happening and it may happen soon.
Paula and I will be watching the NCAA men’s final basketball tournament game tonight. We recorded it. I can’t stay up that late, and get up at 4:30 am to write a fishing report.
So, I have to get through today without looking at any news websites. I don’t think I have done that since the internet became available. If someone at the shop mentions basketball, I will cover my ears. The big sports fans at the shop are me, Bill and Dave A. Neither of them are working today. This is going to be interesting.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
