Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:30 am, the temperature is 54.5 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the upper 70’s and a low tonight in the middle 40’s. Rain returns tonight. It may be windy. We may get up to a half inch of rain. Tomorrow will be sunny and cooler with a high in the middle 60’s and a low in the upper 30’s.
Little River is flowing at 299 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.18 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 377 cfs. The water temperature is 52.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies rose yesterday but most are now receding to near normal. Little Pigeon River is currently rising. Water temperatures are good in the low elevations. We will see water temperatures rise today. Fishing will be good.
I would fish in the low to middle elevations this morning where the water is warmer. Dry flies, wet flies and nymphs should all work for you.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers flowing out of the park is good. Nymphs, squirmy worms, mop flies, small streamers and bead head midges are good fly choices.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lower reaches of the lowland rivers may be fair to good today. Nymphs and streamers will work best for you.
There are long pauses in the generation planned at several dams today, giving tailwater anglers windows of opportunity. You should be able to carefully plan a wade or float trip on some tailwaters today. Check the TVA website to see what options you have.
I have not heard many lake fishing reports from fly fishing customers and friends. Jack told me he and Joe fished one of the impoundments on the Little Tennessee River day before yesterday and fishing was slow. Smallmouth bass were not in the shallow water. They will be soon, when the water warms further. Some lakes may be warmer now, and fishing may be better.
Smallmouth bass in lakes tend to be found on the rocky banks in the Spring, where they are preparing to spawn. Also, the fish can be found on rip rap covered banks, where the warm rocks raise the water temperatures. A large dark Wooly Bugger is a great searching pattern for smallmouth bass in the Spring. I tie mine on 2/0 jig hooks, heavily weighted with round lead free wire. The only color is use is black.
May has always been the best month for me, fishing for smallies on the lakes. After the spawn, I have done well using foam top water flies. Knuckleheads and Stealth Bombers are good patterns for all bass, largemouth and smallmouth.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
