Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 36.9 degrees.
We could see snow flurries this morning in the foothills with more accumulating snow in the high elevations. Newfound Gap Road was closed yesterday due to snow and ice and it is still closed. Expect some rain today in the lower elevations with a high temperature in the upper 40’s and a low tonight in the low 30’s. Tomorrow will be sunny and warm with a high in the low 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 319 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.32 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 381 cfs. The water temperature is 46.4 degrees and falling this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing at about median flow for this date. The streams are chilly and the water temperatures are plunging this morning. I don’t think we will see the water warm much today and overnight. Tomorrow will show some fishing improvement.
If you go today, fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best for you.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers may be fair and could be good. Sub-surface flies will work best. Bead head midges, nymphs, squirmy worms, mop flies and small streamers are good fly choices.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will likely be slow due to the cold water temperatures. If you decide to try, nymphs and streamers are your best fly choices. Smallies were actively feeding a few days ago. It is possible they are now. I don’t think it is likely since water temperatures have fallen into the 40’s but you never know for sure until you go.
The turbines will be paused for long periods or off all day at several dams offering anglers good flows at times on the tailwaters below. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to plan your tailwater trout fishing day. Tailwater fishing may be your best option today.
Guide Tic Smith, who has probably guided more on the Hiwassee River than anyone I know personally, told me about a USGS temperature probe on the river. The site is located above Reliance. You can see the page by CLICKING HERE. Choose between 7-day, 30 day and 1 year views. Evidently, this probe and reported data has been available since 2018.
Those who fish on the beautiful Hiwassee River can add this tool to their arsenal.
We will be at the shop today between 9 am until 6 pm, waiting for you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
