Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 28.2 degrees.
It will be sunny today and much warmer, with a high in the low 70’s and a low tonight in the upper 40’s. It will be warm over the next few days with a chance for rain every day. Expect highs in the high 70’s with lows in the 50’s. We could top 80 degrees Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 287 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.24 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 353 cfs. The water temperature is 43.5 degrees this morning.
The warming trend beginning today will improve fishing this week. The streams are cold now, but the water will begin warming later today. If you go fishing in the Smokies, I would wait a while until the plunging temperatures start warming. Fish the low elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will probably work best for you today.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers will improve as the rivers warm. You will do best using nymphs, squirmy worms, mop flies, small streamers and possibly bead head midge patterns.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in these rivers will likely be slow until the water temperatures rise in a day or so. If you decide to try fishing in the lower reaches, nymphs and streamers will work best.
Tailwater trout fishing conditions continue to improve. TVA and the Corps are offering many options today. You should check the TVA website and choose a time and place to fish on one of the many tailwaters we have here in the region.
Yesterday, I uploaded a couple of new and exciting Semperfli fly tying products to our online store and there are more to come. Of course, they are also available “live and in person” at the shop.
Two new materials I really like are Perdigon Body and Dirty Bug Yarn. The Perdigon Body material is a tinsel that is wrapped then coated with UV, giving you a body that reflects light like you would not believe until you see it.
Dirty Bug yarn is an easy to use alternative to dubbing and the nymph bodies offer realistic presentation to trout and other species.
Both are offered in 11 colors.
We also are stocking Semperfli thread in two sizes, 6/0 and 8/0 and an incredible selection of 33 colors in each size. Additionally, we are stocking Inferno Goose Biots, available in many bright colors, something I have not seen until now.
CLICK HERE to check out these beautiful fly tying materials. Ground shipping is free in the US with no strings attached if you order from us.
We will be open today from 9 am until 5 pm, waiting to serve you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
