Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 45.1 degrees.
Redbud Winter has passed. We can expect warm temperatures through March 25th.
It will be partly sunny today with a high temperature in the low 70’s, falling to the upper 50’s tonight. Rain showers are possible tomorrow morning. The high temperature will be in the upper 70’s with a low tomorrow night in the low to middle 60’s. Wednesday will be cloudy with a high in the low 80’s and a low in the low 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 283 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.23 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 327 cfs. The water temperature is 48.6 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing almost exactly at median flow for this date. There was a small rise in water levels yesterday due to snow melting in the high elevations. Mount LeConte reported 8 inches of snow on the ground Saturday.
The streams are warming and they will continue to warm over the next few days. Fishing will be good again. You may want to start in the low elevations today where the water is warmer. The temperatures may rise slowly at first due to snow melt.
Start with weighted nymph rigs. Be prepared with dry flies and wet flies to use later today. There are many species of aquatic insects on the water. I would plan on using a Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis or a Stimulator as an attractor dry fly when trout are feeding on the surface. Drop a wet fly or emerger off your dry. Most any reasonable nymphs will work. It’s hard to beat a Bead Head Pheasant Tail. One of the many different colors of a Perdigon makes a good anchor fly on your Euro nymph rig.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers is improving and should be good today. Try nymphs, squirmy worms, mop flies, small streamers or bead head midge patterns.
As the lowland rivers warm, fishing for smallmouth bass will be good again. Nymphs and streamers will work best. Crawfish patterns are a good choice too.

We have a new fly tying dubbing for sale in the shop and yesterday I loaded it up on the online store. The dubbing comes from Semperfli and it is called Kapok. It is touted as being an exception dry fly dubbing. You can see it by CLICKING HERE.
Kapok has been used for many years for floatation in life jackets. It is a natural material that is harvested from the seed pods of the Kapok tree, found in the tropics. The tree is not harvested to get this material.
The fibers are light and hollow. The material is moisture resistant, quick drying and buoyant. Semperfli found a way to die the fibers into many great colors for fly tyers. Making a dubbing loop to form the body is recommended, so you don’t crush the hollow fibers. Wrap your loop around the hook and trim the body to the shape you desire.
