Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:52 am, the temperature is 58.5 degrees.
Rain fell overnight and this morning, amounting to about one quarter of an inch in Townsend. We have a chance for more showers this morning before clearing later. The high temperature today will be in the upper 60’s, falling to the low 40’s tonight. Rainfall should be light. It will be mostly sunny tomorrow with a high in the upper 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 598 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.85 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date 276 cfs. The water temperature is 56.3 degrees this morning.
So far, streams in the mountains are not rising much. There is a chance we may see the streams rise later this morning. Some streams are flowing quite a bit higher than normal while others are flowing closer to median flow. They are all flowing fairly high.
It is hard to say what we can expect later. Keep an eye on the USGS gauges if you plan to fish today.
If you are planning to fish for trout or smallmouth bass on a lowland river, check the gauges before making a long trip. The rivers are flowing fairly high and they could flow higher later.
Aside from the unknown flows later, one important factor is water temperature. The streams are warm. Trout and smallmouth bass are active. This may turn out to be a good fishing day though wading may limited in some streams.
Tomorrow, and through the weekend looks to be much better.
Here is some good news. TVA and the Corps will hand us some angler friendly flows at several dams in the region. There are fairly long to long pauses in the generation planned. Check the schedules on the TVA website from the links below to hopefully plan a fishing day on one of our tailwaters.
I re-checked the stream flows in the mountains. None of the streams are rising significantly and others are not rising at all.
This may be a good fishing day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
