Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:52 am, the temperature is 38.5 degrees.
It rained again early yesterday morning. A quarter of an inch fell in Townsend at our house.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the upper 70’s and a low tonight in the 50’s.
Rain will move into the area overnight and continue tomorrow. We could get up to another half of an inch. The high will be in the low 70’s with a low tomorrow night in the middle 40’s.
Easter Sunday will be partly sunny early in the day, with a chance for rain in the afternoon. Expect a high around 70 degrees. The shop will be closed Easter Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 531 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.74 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 302 cfs. The water temperature is 52.2 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the mountains are flowing higher than median flow. Others are not. For instance, Oconaluftee River is flowing right at median flow at the Birdtown gauge.
What you will see this morning in the Smokies, are fairly high flows. Some streams are flowing higher than some anglers prefer. There will be swift areas where wading is limited in some drainages.
Using weighted nymph rigs will be a good strategy today. Stand in safe water and high stick or Euro nymph a pair of nymphs through likely trout holding spots. Water temperatures are good in the low to middle elevations. It will be sunny and warm today, water temperatures will rise, so you may venture into the higher elevations later.
Dry fly fishing is a possibility due to the fact that the water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range. Trout will be active and looking for food.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers will be good today. Again, nymphs are a good fly choice.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in these rivers is improving. Fishing may be good for smallies today. Nymphs and streamers should be used. Wading may be limited in the river you choose.
There are generation pauses planned at several dams today. Your window of opportunity varies by dam, so careful planning is required. There will be no generation at two dams and maybe more. Check the schedules from the links below to see what tailwater options you have today.
This is going to be a very nice day to be fishing or enjoying the outdoors. It is Spring. Dogwoods are in full bloom. Wildflowers are blooming.
I think the mating season for wild turkeys is about over. We are seeing less hens at our house. The have all but disappeared. They are probably nesting. One huge gobbler has been hanging around our bird feeders, waiting for dropped seeds.
Goldfinch males are showing their full mating colors, a bright yellow hue. Hummingbirds have arrived at our house. More will come soon. Mourning doves are everywhere we look.
We have still not seen one bear at our house this year. That is highly unusual. I am not complaining. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy watching black bear from a distance. It’s those startling encounters from a short distance outside that we are always watchful for. I can’t count how many times I have been staring at a bear from just a few feet away. Sometimes they give me a warning, especially if cubs are involved. Most times, they just walk or run away.
We started locking our vehicles a few years ago. It seems like all of a sudden, we began hearing stories about bears opening doors, climbing into cars or trucks, and tearing the interior to shreds. Or, they get in and won’t leave.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
