Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 53.6 degrees.
Light rain has been falling since 3:50 am this morning, totaling .13 inches so far.
The rain should end by 8 am. Today’s high temperature will be in the low 70’s, dropping to the upper 40’s tonight. It will be partly sunny tomorrow with a high in the low 70’s and a low tomorrow night around 50 degrees. Rain will move in Sunday night and continue through Monday.
Little River is flowing at 468 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.63 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 283 cfs. The water temperature is 53.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing at or higher than median flow. We may see some streams rise this morning. Heavy rain is not predicted but it could occur as there is a chance for thunderstorms early today. Water temperatures are good in the low to middle elevation streams and trout are actively feeding.
Weighted nymph rigs will work for sure. Dry flies and wet flies may produce for you as well.
Fishing for trout in the lowland rivers should be good today, unless the rivers become stained due to the rain falling now. That does not seem likely. Nymphs, squirmy worms, mop flies and small streamers will work. If not, switch to bead head midge patterns fished under a strike indicator.
Lowland river fishing for smallmouth bass is improving by the day as the rivers warm. Nymphs or streamers are good fly choices. Some of these rivers have strong flows so wading may be limited.
There will be long pauses in the generation schedules at many dams today. Tailwater anglers have a lot of choices that will require careful planning. The generators will be off all day at a couple of dams. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have.
Tomorrow, being Easter Sunday, the shop will be closed and I will not be writing a fishing report. Maybe I can sleep in. Fishing should be good tomorrow.
We have a lot of visitors in town for the holiday weekend. We were busy at the shop yesterday and we will probably be busy today. We will be open from 9 am until 6 pm.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
