Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 54.3 degrees.
Expect rain today with a chance for thunderstorms this morning. In fact, it is raining here at our house now. Rainfall amounts from a quarter to one half on an inch are predicted. It may be windy in the mountains. Today’s high temperature will be in the middle to upper 50’s with a low tonight in the middle 30’s.
Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the upper 50’s and a low in the 30’s tomorrow night. Warmer temperatures will return Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 382 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.46 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 271 cfs. The water temperature is 55.0 degrees at the low elevation USGS site near Townsend.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing at or slightly higher than median flow for this date. Water temperatures are good in the low to middle elevations. There is a chance some streams may be temporarily stained and rising today.
Fish today in the low to middle elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will work. Dry flies and wet flies may produce as well.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains is good. Nymphs, squirmy worms, mop flies and small streamers are good fly choices. You may also want to try midges suspended under strike indicators.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in these rivers is fair to good. Nymphs, streamers and crayfish patterns should work for you.
There will be pauses in the generation at many TVA and Corps dams today with several pauses being long. Tailwater anglers have a lot of choices today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
The shop was closed yesterday which is rare. We close only four days a year. I do not write this fishing report on those days. The next day we close will be Thanksgiving.
We will be open today at 9 am.
I think the front of our building will be power washed today and prepped for painting. The front of the shop faces west, and gets a lot of intense sun. It has to be painted frequently. Our parking lot is scheduled to be sealed in June. Mulch and landscaping work will be done in the next few weeks.
Paula and I bought the land and built the building in 2003. We moved the shop to the new location in 2004. It is Little River Outfitter’s third location since 1994 when the shop opened. The first two building were leased.
We designed and built the building specifically to be a fly shop. We located next to the post office due to us being in the mail order business. There are currently ten of us working at the shop, not including fly fishing instructors.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
