Today will be mostly sunny and warmer than yesterday, with a high temperature in the low 70’s. It will be much warmer tonight with a low around 50 degrees. Tomorrow will be cloudy early before clearing later. The high temperature will reach near 80 degrees with a low tomorrow night around 50 degrees again. Friday, and through the weekend will be sunny and very warm.

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:36 am, the temperature is 57.2 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the middle 70’s, and a low tonight in the 50’s. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer. Expect a high in the low 80’s and a low in the middle 50’s tomorrow night. Saturday and Sunday will be sunny with a high in the 80’s and lows in the 50’s. I don’t know how you could ask for better fishing weather than we are having right now.
Little River is flowing at 363 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.42 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 263 cfs. The water temperature is 52.5 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than median flow for this date with some exceptions. Tellico River is flowing very close to median flow. There may be others. Water levels will fall every day through Sunday.
The streams have been cold in the mornings lately. Fishing has been slow early and improving later in the day when the water is warmer. That has changed. Now and through the weekend, the warmer days and night have improved fishing in the freestone mountain streams all day, especially in the lower elevations.
Trout are active now that the water is warmer. Fishing is good. Nymphs, dry flies and wet flies will work for you. My dry fly choices would be, Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis and stimulators in sizes #12 through #16.
Fishing for stocked trout in the rivers flowing out of the mountains is good. Sub-surface flies will probably work best. Nymphs, squirmy worms, mop flies, bead head midges and small streamers are good fly choices. Some rivers are flowing fairly high so wading may be limited.
Smallmouth bass are active in the lowland rivers due to the warmer water. Fishing for smallies will improve every day through Sunday. I think nymphs, streamers and crayfish patterns will work best. As the streams warm further this week, you may want to try foam floating flies or poppers to see what happens. It will be overcast today, which is helpful, if the bass are holding in shallow water. You may do best early or late after today. Wading may be limited in some of the rivers or areas in the rivers.
There are long breaks in the generation schedules planned at several dams in the region. If you are planning to fish on a tailwater, you have choices today, and more if you are boating. If you have a guide booked today, your guide will know where and when to go and offer you a good day of fishing.
Overall, this is now a good fishing week with lots of options.
I talked to a couple from Pennsylvania yesterday. They are thinking about moving to the area. They asked me to describe the trout fly fishing opportunities here. I started by telling them about the hundreds of miles of trout streams in the Park. Then, I tried to describe the abundance of trout streams in the national forests bordering or near the Park in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina. I mentioned the tailwaters. They asked if the tailwaters can be waded. Of course, they can, at times. I told them about the many lakes in the area, that offer fly fishing anglers many more options, when boating, canoeing or kayaking.
One more thing. We are not that far from the coast, if they are interested in saltwater fly fishing.
If you enjoy fly fishing, this is a good place to live. The last thing I told them is, “people are friendly here”.
