Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 56.3 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm again today, with a high temperature in the middle 80’s and a low tonight in the upper 50’s. Tomorrow will bring us more of the same. Showers and thunderstorms will move into the area tomorrow night and remain through Tuesday. It will be cooler Tuesday, with a high in the middle 60’s and a low at night in the low 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 271 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.20 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 238 cfs. The water temperature is 59.5 degrees.
Generally, streams in the Smokies are flowing right at normal. The streams are warm and within the preferred range of the trout.
Trout are very active. With their metabolism in high gear, they are looking for food.
Fishing is very good. Trout are taking nymphs, dry flies and wet fly emergers. Good dry fly choices include Light Cahill, Adams, Elk Hair Caddis and small yellow Stimulators. Sub-surface offerings should include Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear, Tellico and Prince nymphs.
Really, if your flies look like reasonable food, the trout will respond. Getting a good drift, with your flies floating at the same speed as the current they are in, is essential to your success. Doing everything you can to hide from the trout is also an important tactic. Wear clothing that blends with the forest.
The streams have warmed to the smallmouth bass’ preference in the lowland rivers. Nymphs, streamers and crayfish patterns will work for sure. Smallmouth bass and other panfish may be tempted by foam floating flies and poppers. Try those if you like. They may or may not work. I’m always hoping they will. It is hard to beat the excitement of a smallmouth river bass taking a top water fly.
There are many tailwater fishing choices today, whether you are wading or boating. Check the TVA website to view the generation schedules and plan your strategy to be at the right place at the right time.
Hopefully, game fish and panfish have moved into shallow water at your home lake. Water temperatures play a huge role in fish behavior everywhere, including in the impoundments. If you are angling for smallmouth bass, my favorite lake species, streamers will work best now. I would be casting a weighted and large black Wooly Bugger to the rocky banks.
Fishing is good on all fronts and fly fishing anglers are taking advantage of the great fishing conditions we have now.
We are busy at the shop, and seeing many out of town and out of state customers. There are a lot of people camping right now.
We will be open from 9 am until 5 pm today.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
