Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 54.3 degrees.
This will be another beautiful day in the Great Smoky Mountains. It will be sunny with a high temperature in the low 80’s, dropping to the middle 50’s tonight. Rain will move in after midnight tonight and continue through tomorrow. Heavy rain is not expected though we may get up to a quarter of an inch on the high side. Wednesday will be sunny and cooler.
Little River is flowing at 249 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.14 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 246 cfs. The water temperature is 60.3 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the mountains are flowing at or slightly lower than normal for this date. Water temperatures are very good and within the trout’s preferred range. Trout are active and fishing is good.
Nymphs, dry flies and wet flies are working well.
Fishing for stocked trout in the rivers flowing out of the mountains is very good. Nymphs, squirmy worms, mop flies and small streamers are good fly choices.
Fishing for cool or warmwater species in the rivers is good. Smallmouth bass are active. Water temperatures are reaching their preferred range. Nymphs and streamers are probably the best flies to use but top water offerings may work too.
Try casting to the rocky banks in the lakes using streamers or swimming nymphs. You should vary your retrieve but I think slow will work best.
There will be pauses in the generation at many dams today. Plan a day of tailwater trout fishing by first checking the schedules from the links below. We have seen good angler friendly flows on the tailwaters lately and many angers are taking advantage of them.
Cades Cove Loop Road is closed for road repairs until Wednesday morning, when it will re-open at 7 am. Don’t make the mistake of planning a day on upper Abrams Creek until Wednesday.
We have a lot of Spring maintenance scheduled at the shop. The front of the building will be power washed and prepped today for painting later this week. The front of the building requires painting often. The afternoon sun is intense. Landscapers will be mulching the beds Saturday.
Bill, who has been mowing and landscaping at the shop for several years decided to retire a few weeks ago. We scrambled to find someone to take over the grass and beds maintenance and we found Brandon. I like Brandon. He will be mowing our grass weekly and keeping the mulch beds maintained.
We are waiting in line for parking lot sealing and striping. That will likely be done by June. Since we are open 7 days a week, half of the lot will be blocked off and sealed over a two day period, then the other half will be sealed. We have 50 parking spaces so closing off half the lot has not been a problem in the past.
It looks like this is going to be another good fishing week in east Tennessee. Make your plans now and go.
