Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 59.5 degrees.
Today will be cooler with a high temperature in the low to middle 60’s and a high chance for rain this morning. Rainfall may amount to about a quarter of an inch today. The low temperature tonight will be in the low 40’s.
Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the middle to upper 60’s and a low in the middle 40’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 235 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.10 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 255 cfs. The water temperature is 60.3 degrees this morning at the low elevation USGS gauge site near Townsend.
Streams in the mountains are flowing close to normal or below normal, but at good fishing levels. Water temperatures are excellent. Trout are actively feeding. Fishing is very good.
Cades Cove Loop Road will be closed today to vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists due to road repairs. The road will re-open tomorrow morning at 7 am. If you hope to fish Abrams Creek, you will not be able to access the Abrams Falls Trail in the Cove today.
Dry flies, nymphs and wet flies are working well in the mountains. Go fishing today in the Smokies and you should do well unless rainfall stains or raises stream levels. That does not look likely according to the weather forecasts I read this morning. I suppose it is possible.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout is good. Fishing in the lower reaches of these rivers for smallmouth bass is improving and should be good due to the warm water and normal flows.
Lake fishing for game fish is improving as the water warms. If you are targeting smallmouth bass, cast streamers to the rocky banks. A large and weighted black Wooly Bugger is a great fly to use in the early Spring as these fish seek out shallow water to spawn.
There are long pauses in the generation planned at many dams today. If you are hoping to fish on a tailwater, you have many choices.
Generation at many dams has been cut back due to the lower than planned lake levels. Water levels in the Ā impoundments are being raised, but from what I am seeing, the levels have been below what TVA normally reports by now. You can see the lake levels by clicking on the Operating Guide on the TVA web pages specific to each dam. You will not see an operating guide on Corps of Engineers dams. The impoundments are raised to full pool for the Summer recreational boating season.
At some point in the future, generation may be cut back more to achieve that goal. That depends on how much rainfall we get later this Spring.
Fishing is very good following all the “ups and downs” we have had this Spring. Now is the time to go fishing.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
