Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 40.6 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature in the middle 70’s and a low tonight in the low 50’s. Tomorrow will bring us more of the same, but slightly warmer at night. Saturday and Sunday will be warmer but there is a chance for showers and thunderstorms both days.
Little River is flowing at 209 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.02 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 257 cfs. The water temperature is 54 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing at or below normal but at good fishing levels. Water temperatures are good in the lower elevations. Streams in the higher elevations will be warmer later today and tomorrow. Fly fishing for trout is good. The fish are taking dry flies, wet flies and nymphs.
David and Buddy camped and fished in the Cataloochee Valley this week. Buddy told me yesterday, fishing was not as good as they hoped, but they did catch trout. Buddy qualified for a Little River Outfitters “Grand Slam Pin” which he was awarded yesterday. He caught all three trout species on the trip, brook, brown and rainbow.
Fishing for stocked trout is good in the rivers flowing out of the mountains. Further downstream, fishing for smallmouth bass is improving every day as the rivers are warming. Fly fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and sunfish will get better beginning today.
Lake and pond fishing is also improving. I talked to a nice couple who were shopping with us yesterday. They have ponds on their property nearby. Bass and bluegill fishing has been good in their ponds, with both species taking top water poppers and foam flies.
Some lakes are warmer than others. Some areas in lakes are warmer than other areas in the same reservoir. Game fish may be found in shallow water at your favorite impoundment. Swimming nymphs, streamers and possibly top water flies will produce for you.
TVA and the Corps are in the process of raising the water levels in their impoundments, to eventually reach full Summer pool. As a result, they are generating less. I saw long pauses in the schedules at some dams, and only short pauses at others when I checked this morning. Tailwater anglers do have choices today. Visit the TVA website to see if your favorite tailwater is one of them.
I found a video this morning on the WBIR website that is interesting. Two large black bears were fighting over something, probably food. The brawl was filmed recently near Gatlinburg. You can see the video by CLICKING HERE. We have been living with bears at our house for almost 30 years. I have never seen a fight. They are powerful animals.
It has been on my “to do” list for a while and I finally decided to begin recently. I am photographing individual thread and other fly tying material spools, to create color charts on the online store. Each spool is photographed individually. Then, I cut away the background in Photoshop and assemble each one displaying the colors you can buy. Doing this takes a lot more time than you probably imagine. I think it is worth the time. I hope you do too.
CLICK HERE to see an example of what I’m talking about. The page depicts our offering of Veevus Power Thread, something we started selling recently. Veevus Power Thread is a 240 denier fly tying thread, used primarily for tying large flies. Click through the slides to see all the colors available. Veevus is a fly tying material company located in Denmark.
The goal is to help shoppers pick colors. I did the same with Veevus 8/0 and I will be working on 6/0 thread today. I have a long way to go on this project. It will feel good to scratch this job off my list.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
