Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 68.9 degrees.
We have a chance for showers and thunderstorms today with a high temperature in the middle 70’s. Some storms may contain heavy rain and gusty winds. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the low 80’s.
Little River is flowing at 176 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.91 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 244 cfs. The water temperature is 59.5 degrees this morning.
All streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range. There is a chance you will encounter stained and possibly high water if a thunderstorm affects the drainage where you are fishing.
Fishing has been good in the mountains. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. You will likely see Yellow Sally Stoneflies and Light Cahills on the water at times.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains is good. Trout are taking nymphs, Squirmy Worms, midge pupa and small streamers.
Smallmouth bass, rock bass and sunfish are becoming active in the free flowing rivers now that the water is warmer. Nymphs, streamers and crayfish patterns are good fly choices. Foam floating flies and poppers may work. I think sub-surface flies are a safer bet.
This may not be a good boating, canoeing or kayak fishing day on the lakes due to the chance for thunderstorms and gusty winds. I would fish close to the ramp and watch for storms. Streamers and swimming nymphs will probably work best for you.
Long pauses in the generation schedules at most dams in our region are planned today. There are many tailwater fishing opportunities. Check the schedule at your favorite tailwater and carefully plan your day.
We have a new lawn and landscaping crew this year. They spent the day yesterday, mulching and trimming trees. I worked outside with them. They did a great job. We are in line to have our parking lot sealed and re-striped. I think that will happen in June. We are also having the front of the building re-painted. The front of the building gets a lot of intense afternoon sun, so it has to be painted more often than the other sides.
In yesterdays report, I mentioned that I bought 4X reading glasses to be used when I tie flies. I was wrong. The magnification power is actually 3X. My bad. I will buy some 4X reading glasses if I can find them. But, I am really pleased with 3X.
I hope you can start the month of May fishing today. I can tell you this, it is windy at our house this morning.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
