Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:53 am, the temperature is 55.0 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny and warm with a high temperature in the middle 80’s. It may be breezy this afternoon. There is a 50% chance for thunderstorm tonight and tomorrow. Tomorrow’s high will be in the low 80’s. We have a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms Thursday with a greater chance Thursday night. Expect rain Friday.
Little River is flowing at 159 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.85 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 255 cfs. The water temperature is 61.0 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal. Some, including Little River, are flowing quite a bit below normal. Water temperatures are good at most elevations. Fishing is good.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Be prepared for both. Light Cahill and Yellow Sally Stonefly dries are good fly choices. Most reasonable nymph patterns will work, though I would tend to choose smaller versions.
Stealth and presentation is very important to your success, especially due to the lower water conditions. Don’t spook the trout and get a good drift. You will catch more.
With water temperatures within the preferred range for trout, lowland river fishing for stocked fish is good. Nymphs, midge pupa and small streamers should be in your fly selection.
Fly fishing for smallmouth bass is good in the lower reaches of the rivers flowing out of the mountains. Nymphs and streamers will work for sure. Foam floating flies and poppers might produce for you as well.
If you are planning to fish on a lake today, be aware that it might be windy. Cast swimming nymphs and streamers to the banks, especially the rocky banks.
There are long pauses in the generation schedules at some dams today. Tailwater anglers have several choices again today.
Overall, fishing is very good in the Tennessee River valley. Customers have been asking me for 27 years, when is the best fishing here. My answer is always, May and June with one caveat included, “Unless we get too much rain”.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
