Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:56 am, the temperature is 65.7 degrees.
A thunderstorm blew through Townsend a few hour ago. We did not get much rain here though it rained hard for a short period. We have a chance for showers and thunderstorms today, though the chance is fairly low. The high temperature will be around 80 degrees.
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the middle 80’s. There is a chance for thunderstorms tomorrow night and a high chance Friday, continuing through the night. Showers are likely Saturday. Sunday will be mostly sunny.
Little River is flowing at 170 cubic feet per second (cfs)d or 1.89 feet on the gauge. The river is rising. Median flow for this date is 262 cfs. The water temperature is 63.3 degrees this morning.
Oconaluftee River and Cataloochee Creek are rising. Other streams are not. Fishing will probably be good today but there is a chance you may find stained and rising water in some watersheds affected by storms.
The streams are warm and trout are actively feeding. Dry flies and nymphs will work for you. I would use Light Cahill or Yellow Sally Stonefly dry flies and small bead head nymphs. Squirmy Worms may also be a good choice today. Pink is the best-selling color in our fly tying department.
Fishing for stocked trout in the rivers flowing out of the mountains will be good today, barring stained water, which is unlikely but possible. Nymphs and small streamers are good fly choices. Try Squirmy Worms too.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and other species is good in the lowland rivers. Again, there is a chance for temporarily stained water today. Nymphs, streamers and crayfish patterns will work. It is possible you can catch fish using top water flies or poppers.
So far, May has been much warmer than average. The lakes are warming, causing game fish to move into shallow water where they will eventually spawn. Streamers and swimming nymphs are good choices. Try foam floating flies and poppers, which may or may not work. I would try them anyway.
There are breaks in the generation planned at several dams today, offering tailwater anglers opportunities for wade and boat fishing. Check the generation schedule at your favorite tailwater and hopefully you can plan a day of fishing.
Will and I are taking another inventory in the fly tying department. My goal is to do this six times per year but I would prefer doing it twelve times per year.
Our inventory control system automatically orders for us. But, it can’t order correctly unless what is shown in stock is correct. Almost all variances are due to our errors we make when receiving orders.
I started taking an inventory of thread yesterday afternoon and I will finish that today along with other sections. We have the department divided into 31 sections. Each section can be counted quickly while customers are shopping. We keep a log showing when each section was inventoried.
There are several thousand items in the fly tying department. We have close to 3,000 unique items to manage. That number, times the number of items stocked of each is the total fly tying inventory.
Hundreds of items are ordered, received and sold in the fly tying department each week.
Doing it well is a big job that requires us to be super organized.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
