Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 57.0 degrees.
Yesterday, strong storms with high winds, hail and heavy rain blew through the county. Rainfall amounted to 1.54 inches at one personal weather station in Townsend.
Rain is likely today and tonight with a high temperature around 60 degrees and a low tonight in the upper 50’s. Heavy rain is not predicted today. It will be mostly sunny tomorrow with a high in the low 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 271 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.20 feet at the USGS gauge site near Townsend. Median flow for this date is 244 cfs. The water temperature is 60.6 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than median flow for this date. Some are receding while others are rising slowly. None of the streams are blown out, just flowing moderately high or close to normal. Oconaluftee River is slightly stained and clearing, according to the USGS gauge site data. Others may be temporarily stained as well.
This will probably be a good nymphing day in the Smokies though dry flies may produce too.
Unless the rivers flowing out of the Smokies are stained, fishing for stocked trout, smallmouth bass and other species will be good. Wading may be limited in some rivers due to fairly high water. Nymphs and streamers are good fly choices for stocked trout and smallmouth bass.
This is probably going to be an ideal lake fishing day. It should be overcast all day, which is an excellent condition when fishing with flies in shallow water. It may be breezy at times. If you are targeting smallmouth bass, cast streamers or swimming nymphs to the rocky banks.
Watch for game fish targeting threadfin shad on the surface, something we see at times on cloudy days or early and late when the sun is off the water.
There are long pauses in the generation schedules at many dams today. Check the TVA website and choose a tailwater to fish.
We are busy at the shop. I worked all day yesterday in the fly tying department, putting out stock and helping customers. I will be doing the same this weekend and placing fly tying orders for next week’s shipments.
The guys downstairs were busy too. May is always our busiest month of the year. Fishing is usually very good in May and that is the case again this year.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
