Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 54.5 degrees.
Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the low 70’s, falling to around 50 degrees tonight. It will be sunny tomorrow with a high in the upper 70’s. Much warmer air will move in Tuesday. Expect sunny days and highs in the 80’s through Thursday.
Little River is flowing at 605 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.86 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 258 cfs. The river is rising. The water temperature is 55.8 degrees.
Some streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal this morning. Others are not, including Cataloochee Creek which is flowing right at normal. Most of the streams are still rising this morning. Though we did not get much rain in Townsend yesterday, more probably fell in the mountains.
Wading may be limited in some streams this morning. Some could be slightly stained. With water still rising in some drainages, it is hard to say right now, when it will peak and recede. Where and when it does, will vary by drainages.
If you go fishing today, expect higher than normal flows. This will be a good nymphing day. Stand in safe water and use weighted nymph rigs. If the water has some color, that could be an advantage for you. Fly choices should include larger weighted nymphs. Squirmy Worms will be a good fly choice. Streamers might work for you, especially to catch brown trout.
Rivers flowing out of the mountains and through the valleys are flowing higher than normal. Wading will be limited. Some rivers may be stained. Nymphs and streamers will work best for stocked trout. Nymphs, streamers and crayfish patterns are good choices for smallmouth bass.
This may be a good lake fishing day, especially at times when there is cloud cover. It is not supposed to be windy. Streamers and swimming nymphs are what I would use for game fish and panfish. If you are targeting smallmouth bass, cast weighted streamers to the rocky banks.
There are long pauses in the generation schedules planned at many dams today. You should not have a problem finding a fishable tailwater if you are wading or boating but both will require careful planning.
Yesterday, a bear found our bird feeders. The good news is for us, Paula happened to be looking outside and saw the bear. She ran it off and brought the feeders inside. They were not destroyed.
The bear returned three more times and she ran it off again and again.
The bad news is, we won’t be feeding the birds until next Winter unless we have a bear proof feeder pole shipped in and installed. That is a very expensive solution that also requires a day of hard work. Installation protocols include digging a wide four foot deep hole and mixing three 80 pound bags of concrete in a wheel barrow.
The birds were the losers and they did not look to be happy about it at all.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
