Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 62.4 degrees.
Over two inches of rain fell in Townsend yesterday. The rain is over for now. Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature around 80 degrees. There is a chance for showers tonight.
Showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast tomorrow but the chance is low. The high temperature will be in the middle 80’s. Rain and thunderstorms are likely tomorrow night through Friday with cooler temperatures.
Little River is flowing at 1,410 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.91 feet on the gauge. The river is receding. Median flow for this date is 185 cfs. The water temperature is 59.4 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 4,710 cfs or 5.49 feet, which is a record for this date. Median flow is 360 cfs at the Sevierville gauge. The river is receding.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,300 cfs or 2.88 feet at the Birdtown gauge. Median flow for this date is 405 cfs. The river is currently rising.
Tellico River is flowing at 990 cfs, 3.17 feet, compared to median flow of 211 cfs. The river is receding.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 365 cfs, 3.44 feet, compared to median flow of 86 cfs. The creek is receding.
Davidson River is flowing at 318 cfs or 1.86 feet, which compares to median flow of 102 cfs. The river is receding quickly.
Streams in the mountains are flowing very high this morning. Most are too high to wade and fish safely. Some may recede to fishable levels later today but there will be strong currents. Be careful wading or don’t wade at all. You could stand in safe water and cast weighted nymph rigs or streamers.
Rivers exiting the mountains are flowing high and swift.
This may be a good lake fishing day. It will be overcast and the winds will be light. You may find stained water in coves where creeks enter or possibly in the main body of water in some lakes. Streamers and swimming nymphs will probably work. Try poppers and foam floating flies as well.
There are long pauses in the generation at many dams today with short periods of pulsing. You should be able to work with some of the schedules on the tailwaters.
We needed the rain and we got some. And, there is more to come this week.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION CONCERNING THE CANEY FORK TROUT FISHERY BELOW CENTER HILL DAM!
The US Army Corps of Engineers is seeking public input as they are planning to update their Water Control Manual for Center Hill Dam. The manual was last updated in 1998. David Knapp, who guides on the Caney Fork and other rivers, brought this to my attention.
According to David, the current manual requires only one hour of generation during a 48 hour period, which is not enough to provide cold water during the warm months. Years ago, before the dam was repaired, seepage helped maintain much needed cool water that is essential for a sustainable trout fishery. David says that is not the case now. If you love fishing the Caney Fork River tailwater, you should look into this and get involved.
The Corps will be holding a public meeting to discuss changes for the new manual on Thursday May 26th from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the Smith County Agricultural center in Carthage, Tennessee.
