Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 58.1 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature in the upper 70’s. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the middle to upper 80’s. Monday will be sunny with a slight chance for afternoon thunderstorms and a high temperature in the upper 80’s.
Little River is flowing high at 1,420 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.92 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 190 cfs. The water temperature is 57.2 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing high today. They are slowly receding. Wading in most streams will be unsafe today.
We are all wondering what the streams will look like tomorrow. That is hard to predict. The ground is saturated from the long periods of rain that occurred over the last few days. The streams will likely recede slowly today and through the weekend. Some small streams run off quicker and may be OK to fish tomorrow but you will need to be careful.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are very high with strong currents.
The lakes will be crowded with pleasure boaters this holiday weekend. Fishing is probably good. It will be a little breezy today. I would launch at daybreak and fish the morning hours when the sun is off the water. As the sun rises, seek shaded banks to fish. Cast streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers or foam floating flies to the banks.
TVA and the Corps will be generating most of the day at several dams. There are long breaks in the generation scheduled at others. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
A rock slide blocked the main highway on the Maryville side of Townsend early yesterday morning. Daniel had advanced warning and bypassed the blocked area using Old Walland Highway to get to the shop. Joel was caught in the traffic. Brandon, who maintains the grounds at the shop got there a little later than normal. The rocks must have been cleared quickly. I talked to customers throughout the day and nobody mentioned it again.
We have been slow at the shop this week. That is normal in a week before a major holiday. Also, the weather has been nasty this week.
That will change beginning today. We will be open every day this weekend and on Monday.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
