Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:33 am, the temperature is 60.1 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. The weather tomorrow will be almost identical though there is a slight chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Little River is flowing at 549 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.77 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 187 cfs. The water temperature is 59.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are still flowing higher than normal. Wading may be limited in some streams but many are now fishable. Currents are swift in places so be careful wading. Most anglers prefer lower water fishing conditions than we have now.
Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice when streams are flowing high. Trout may be caught on dry flies too.
Rivers flowing out of the mountains are at levels higher than normal. If you are fishing for stocked trout, stand in safe water and use nymphs, small streamers, squirmy worms. Suspending nymphs under a strike indicator is a good tactic under these conditions.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and warmwater species in the lowland rivers is good. The rivers are flowing higher than normal, so wading will be limited. Streamers, nymphs, crayfish patterns, poppers or foam floating flies are all good choices.
Lake fishing is good. The lakes are going to be very crowded today. It will also be sunny, which is not a good condition when fishing shallow water. Launch at daybreak and plan to fish the morning hours. As the sun rises, find shaded banks to fish. Streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers and foam floating flies are good choices.
Generation schedules at some dams will be good for wade fishing on the tailwaters. Schedules at other dams are not. Check the TVA website from the links below to plan your tailwater fishing day.
Today we honor Americans who served in the armed forces and died fighting for our Country. This very important day of mourning, honoring and remembering dates back to the Civil War. God bless America and our brave soldiers who fought for our freedom.
We will be open today.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
