Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 63.9 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny and warm with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. There is a low chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. It will be sunny and hot tomorrow with a high in the low 90’s. Thunderstorms are likely Thursday and Thursday night.
Little River is flowing at 421 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.54 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 177 cfs. The water temperature is 61.2 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal but fishable. Most anglers prefer lower water conditions than we have now. Currents are strong in some areas so be careful wading.
Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice. Trout will also take dry flies. I would recommend using a yellow sally stonefly pattern for your dry fly but others may work well too. Trout are hungry and looking for food.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are of course flowing higher than normal. Fishing for stocked trout is good. Nymphs, squirmy worms, small streamers and midge pupa will take stocked trout.
Fishing is good further downstream, where smallmouth bass and panfish make up the dominant species. Wading will be limited somewhat in these rivers. Streamers, nymphs, crayfish patterns, foam floating flies and poppers should all work well for you. I would go early or late. Yesterday, I saw a ton of people swimming in Little River in all the popular spots from Walland to Townsend.
Lake fishing is good. Winds will be light today. Game fish are taking top water and sub-surface flies. Streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers and foam floating flies should all work for you. It will be sunny today, so fishing will be best early and late. There should be less recreation boaters on the lakes today.
A woman and man riding on a jet ski collided with a pontoon boat on South Holston Lake yesterday. The woman on the jet ski died and the man is in serious condition. People on the pontoon boat were not injured.
You have many tailwater fishing options today. There will be periods of no generation with pulsing at most dams. TVA will be generating and spilling all day at Douglas and Wilbur dams.
Fishing conditions are much better than they have been lately and they are improving every day. Hopefully we will not get too much rain Thursday. May has been an exceptional month at the shop. We have been busy. May is usually the best month for us. June is often a close second.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
