Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 65.7 degrees.
Today will be sunny and hot with a high temperature in the low 90’s. It will be a little cooler tomorrow, in the upper 80’s, with thunderstorms likely later in the day and overnight. We have a slight chance for showers Friday and cooler temperatures.
Little River is flowing at 341 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.37 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 175 cfs. The water temperature is 62.6 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are still flowing higher than normal. We have plenty of water, but the streams are fishable.
I would fish in a higher elevation stream today where the water is cooler. Trout will be taking nymphs and dry flies. A yellow sally stonefly imitation is what I would choose for my dry fly. A Green Weenie used as a dropper is a good tactic anytime during the Summer months.
Fishing for stocked trout is probably still good in most rivers flowing out of the mountains. Try nymphs, squirmy worms or midge pupa. You may want to use a strike indicator. Small streamers may also work.
Wading may be limited in some lowland rivers but most are flowing at good fishing levels. If you are targeting smallmouth bass, cast streamers, nymphs, crayfish patterns, poppers or foam floating flies. You might want to float these rivers in a canoe or kayak.
This will be a good lake fishing day, especially if you go early or late when the sun is off the water. Winds are predicted to be light today. Streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers and foam floating flies will attract bass and panfish. Cast to the shaded banks.
If you hope to fish on a tailwater today, you have several choices. There will be long periods of low to no generation at many dams. There are exceptions. They will be generating and spilling at Douglas and Wilbur Dams and generating at Wolf Creek Dam all day.
You could squeeze in an all-day float below Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky, with careful planning. That is one of my favorite tailwaters. Frank and I always float the river with guide Hagan Wonn. We have some days booked with Hagan this Summer and I can’t wait to go.
Daniel and I will be placing our Simms order today for Spring next year. We will be ordering a lot more waders and boots than have been ordered during the last 3 years.
May was a great month at the shop. I will run sales reports today so we can see how each department in the store performed. I already know our total sales were up from last year.
Ricky, who has been staining the front side of the store will finish his project today. He has done an excellent job. We will re-attach the signs to the building. Our parking lot is scheduled to be sealed and striped this month. Since we are open seven days a week, the sealing and striping will be done in phases, so we still have some parking for you and us during the process.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
