Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:54 am, the temperature is 66.4 degrees.
Scattered thunderstorms blew through the area yesterday afternoon and we got a little rain overnight. I saw several drenched customers in the shop yesterday. We got between .33 inches to .74 inches of rain during the past 24 hours at personal weather stations around Townsend. The Knoxville Airport reports .37 inches during the period.
We have a slight chance for thunderstorms this morning but today will be mostly cloudy and dry later. Humidity will be lower and today’s high temperature will be in the upper 70’s. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 80’s. Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high in the middle 80’s. Again, there is a slight chance for thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and evening.
Little River is flowing at 426 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.55 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 163 cfs. The river rose slightly late yesterday and into the evening. It appears to have peaked now. At this point, the river is flowing on the high side of good.
Other streams in the mountains rose slightly yesterday, but they are not rising now. If we do not get heavy rain this morning, fishing conditions should be fine today. They are all flowing higher than median flow, which is normally low in early June.
I think today will be a good fishing day in the mountains. If you plan to fish in the Smokies today, check the USGS gauges before you go.
Dry flies and nymphs are working. My rig choice would be a yellow sally stonefly imitation with a Green Weenie dropper. That is often a effective combination now and throughout the Summer. Squirmy Worms work well too, in several different colors. Pink is by far the best selling color bought by fly tyers who shop in the fly tying department. Red sells well too.
It looks like the rivers flowing out of the mountains are OK right now. Fishing for stocked trout is good. Use nymphs, squirmy worms, small streamers or weenies and you should do well.
If you are fishing further downstream, there is a chance you will encounter stained water where lowland tributaries enter the rivers. If you see that, move further upstream to hopefully find clear water. Smallmouth bass fishing is good. Streamers, nymphs, poppers and foam floating flies will work.
This will be a good lake fishing day, mainly because it is supposed to be cloudy. Winds are expected to be between 5 and 10 miles per hour. It may be hard to control your boat while fishing at times today, if the wind is blowing at the high range that is predicted. You can usually find places to avoid the wind.
I would definitely go. I love lake fishing on cloudy days. A little chop is good when fishing in shallow water. Cast streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers or foam floating flies.
If you hope to fish on a tailwater today, you have many choices. There are long pauses in generation planned at most dams today. There are a few exceptions. Visit the TVA website from the links below to plan your tailwater fishing day.
I met a nice young guy named Kyle in the fly tying department yesterday. We spoke briefly and I went back into my office to place fly tying material orders. I returned to check on him, to see if he needed help. He had never been in our shop though he lives only a hour away. He told me he started fly fishing a few months ago. He began learning to tie flies a few weeks ago.
I am amazed at his knowledge of fly fishing and tying. He was speaking words that I would never expect to hear from someone who has been in the sport for a short period of time. Kyle obviously has been motivated to learn and he has learned a lot. He has been fishing often. He has been watching YouTube videos. And now he is tying flies. I look forward to seeing him in the shop, now that he found us.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
