Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 58.6 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the low to middle 80’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely tomorrow through Wednesday night. High temperatures will be in the middle 80’s through the period.
Little River is flowing at 202 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.00 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 158 cfs. The water temperature is 61.9 degrees this morning.
Water levels in the Smokies are higher than normal but ideal for wading and fishing. Water temperatures are good.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Good dry fly choices are yellow sally stonefly imitations and terrestrials. It is a good idea to drop a Green Weenie or other small bead head nymph off your dry fly. The Green Weenie is a perfect inchworm pattern to use. Trout are definitely eating inchworms that fall into the water.
Fishing for stocked trout is good in the rivers flowing out of the mountains. Use nymphs, midge pupa, squirmy worms or small streamers. A #10 olive or black Wooly Bugger is a good streamer choice.
Flows are very good in the lowland rivers where you should be fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish. Foam floating flies, poppers, nymphs, streamers and crayfish patterns should all work for you. Some rivers are flowing high enough to float in a canoe or kayak.
Lake fishing is good. Since it will be mostly sunny today, fish early or late. Hit the shaded banks with foam floating flies, poppers, streamers or swimming nymphs. My choice would be to launch at daybreak and fish until mid-morning when I can’t find shaded banks.
Fishing is good for trout in the cold sections of the tailwaters. Fishing is also good for smallmouth bass fishing on some tailwaters in the lower reaches where the water is warmer. There are pauses in the generation scheduled at many dams that you can work with today. Visit the TVA website to see what options you have.
Fishing is good. We have many choices.
I have several shipments of fly tying materials and tools arriving today with more coming later this week. I have also re-ordered from some companies for arrival next week. Our materials and tools are shipped to us from companies in Oregon, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Arkansas, Florida and Montana.
When I know exactly what has been shipped, I create a purchase order in our inventory system. Then, the system knows what is in route. At that point, I can re-order automatically without ordering items that will be in the shop in a few days. For instance, I placed orders yesterday with Wapsi and Hareline. I have shipments from both coming in today. That is how I keep the fly tying department stocked so well.
Of course, there are items that our suppliers are out of. I hate that but there is nothing I can do about it.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
