Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 68.9 degrees.
Rain fell in the area yesterday but we were spared the heavy rain and thunderstorms in Townsend. Total rainfall was .38 inches in Townsend and .69 inches at the Knoxville Airport.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely today and tonight. The high temperature today will be in the low 80’s. Strong storms are possible but more likely to our west. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 80’s.
Little River is flowing at 199 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.99 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 157 cfs. The water temperature is 64.2 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies rose yesterday but they are all receding. Tellico River rose quickly and fairly high but the river is receding.
Fishing in the mountains should be good today barring high or stained water which is possible. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Yellow sally stonefly patterns are good dry fly choices as well as terrestrial imitations. Try a foam beetle. Drop a Green Weenie off your dry fly to increase your odds.
Fishing for stocked trout is good in the rivers flowing out of the mountains. Use nymphs, small streamers, weenies, squirmy worms or midge pupa. Again, there is a chance for rising and stained water.
Water levels are ideal in many lowland rivers. Others may be flowing fairly high this morning. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is good. The fish are taking streamers, nymphs, crayfish patterns, poppers and foam floating flies.
It will be overcast today, which is a perfect condition for lake fishing. You may want to fish fairly close to the ramp, in case you get chased off the water by a thunderstorm. Cast to the banks using streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers or foam floating flies.
You have many tailwater fishing opportunities today. Check the TVA website to see where and how you can work with the generation schedules.
We were busy at the shop yesterday. That is often the case on rainy days. There are a lot of customers from other states here to fish in the Smokies. Some customers are preparing for fishing trips to the coast. One of the guys who works in the shop has been fishing in the Florida Keys for a few days. I can’t wait to hear how well he did. He was probably “weathered out” at times by the tropical storm.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
