Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 70.7 degrees.
We are under a heat advisory again this afternoon. The high temperature is expected to be in the middle 90’s with a heat index of 100+. We have a slight chance for a thunderstorm this afternoon. Tomorrow will be a little cooler, with a high temperature in the low 90’s. There is a chance for thunderstorms tomorrow. Expect a high around 90 degrees Friday before cooling off Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 117 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.68 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 153 cfs. The water temperature is 69.8 degrees this morning and topped out at 72 degrees yesterday.
Some streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal while other are flowing slightly higher. Water temperatures in the low elevations are not good for the health of trout you catch and release and these conditions will last at least through Friday. Fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Check the temperature. Look for water temps that are 65 degrees or cooler.
Hike into the backcountry at higher elevations. Rivers flowing along roads are crowded with swimmers and tubers. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs.
You should do well fishing the lowland rivers for warmwater species. I would go early or late. The rivers are flowing fairly low. Fish in the deeper pools with poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
Lake fishing is good. Stan and Dan fished on a lake nearby and did well yesterday. Go early or late to avoid the direct sun and the heat during the day. Cast to the banks with streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers or foam floating flies. Fish the shaded banks.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at several dams today. Most of those pauses will be early and in some cases through the afternoon. Tailwater anglers do have opportunities today. Visit the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are today.
More stories, photos and videos are emerging, highlighting the destructive flood in and around Yellowstone National Park. The Park is closed and almost completely evacuated. Roads and bridges are washed out. Some towns are flooded. The hospital in Livingston was evacuated. One bridge I have crossed many times over the Yellowstone River was washed out.
There is doubt that the north entrance to the Park in Gardiner will reopen this season. Tourist season in Yellowstone was ramping up. Read more about this horrible flood on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
Stay cool today and drink plenty of water.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
