Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 66.9 degrees.
A line of thunderstorms moved through parts of the southeast yesterday afternoon. Though short in duration, some storms contained heavy rain and hail. Rainfall in Townsend amounted to .80 inches, and lasted about one hour. I watched the storms move into the Smokies on radar. The storms appeared to lose strength when they approached the highest elevations.
It will be much cooler this weekend. Expect sunny days with no rain predicted. High temperatures will be in the low 80’s. Lows at night will be in the middle 50’s. Another heat wave will return Tuesday with highs in the 90’s again, lasting through next weekend.
Little River is flowing at 141 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.78 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 146 cfs. The water temperature is 69.3 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the mountains are flowing at normal with some flowing higher and others flowing lower. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Do the trout a favor and fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. We will see water temperatures fall tonight and tomorrow night.
Dry flies and nymphs are working. Yellow sally stonefly and beetle imitations are good dry fly choices. Drop a Green Weenie dropper off your dry fly.
Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish fishing will be good in most lowland rivers. Try poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns. I would go early or late.
Lake fishing will be best early and late when the sun is off the water. Fish the shaded banks using streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers or foam floating flies.
If you are planning to fish on a tailwater today, you have many options whether you are boating or wading. Visit the TVA website to plan your day.
Anthony Hipps who is the backbone and leader of Fly Tyers Weekend announced the event scheduled for November 5th & 6th 2022 is cancelled. Fly Tyers Weekend is now fully managed by Anthony and the Southeastern Council of Fly Fishers International (SECFFI) formerly the Fly Fishing Federation.
The hosting lodge changed ownership this year. The new owner and management had no record of the event being held there. Anthony learned the lodge was under new ownership just recently. A new binding and written agreement could not be worked out. Cancelling the event was his only choice. It is too late to secure another location. Little River Outfitters is a sponsor of Fly Tyers Weekend and we are disappointed by this. Fly Tyers Weekend would never have been the great event it is, without Anthony and all the fly tyers who demonstrate. We appreciate all of you very much. Hopefully, we will enjoy this great event in the future.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
