Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:55 am, the temperature is 52.7 degrees.
It will be sunny and fairly cool today with a high temperature in the low 80’s, dropping to the upper 50’s tonight. Tomorrow will be warmer with a high in the upper 80’s and a low in the low 60’s. Tuesday through Saturday will be hot again. Expect highs in the 90’s each day.
Little River is flowing at 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.61 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 136 cfs. The lowest flow recorded on this date was 56.6 cfs in 2015. The water temperature is 67.1 degrees this morning at the low elevation USGS gauge site near Townsend. Yesterday, the water temperature rose to near 73 degrees.
Most mountains streams are flowing below normal. There are exceptions. Tellico River is flowing higher than normal. The water will be warm in the low elevations, though cooler than during the heat wave last week. Still, for the health and well being of the trout you catch and release, fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for temperatures in the 60’s.
Due to the low water conditions in most streams, stealth is paramount to your success. Dress to blend with the forest. Stay low as you can to avoid being seen by the trout. Use finer tippets. A dry and dropper rig is a good tactic. I would use a yellow sally stonefly or a terrestrial pattern for my dry fly with a Green Weenie dropper.
Many lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains and through the valleys are flowing low today. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish will be fair and maybe better, depending on where you are fishing. I would use poppers or foam floating flies drifted through the runs and deeper pools. Fishing will be best early or late.
The lakes will be crowded with pleasure boaters. Go fishing early to avoid the traffic and sun. Cast poppers, foam floating flies, swimming nymphs or streamers to the banks and cover. As the sun rises higher, find shaded areas to fish.
This looks like a good tailwater fishing day, though you will need to plan your day around the generation schedules. Check the TVA website from the links below to make your decisions.
We are seeing many young families in town enjoying their vacation in the Great Smoky Mountains. Tourist season has begun.
We lack the attractions found in many gateway towns. Our draw is the natural beauty found here and nearby. Townsend is known as the peaceful side of the Smokies for a good reason. Even during the Summer tourist season, our town remains relatively peaceful. I love living here.
Happy Father’s day dads!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
