Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 49.5 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s and a low tonight in the low 60’s. We are under a Air Quality Alert due to high ozone levels. People with a respiratory disease should limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
A heat wave returns tomorrow and will last until at least Sunday. High temperatures each day will be in the 90’s. There is a low chance for thunderstorms each day beginning Thursday.
Little River is flowing low at 89.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.56 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 135 cfs. The record low on this date was 54.8 cfs in 2015. The water temperature is 64.4 degrees this morning.
Many streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal though Tellico River is actually flowing higher. Water temperatures in the higher elevations look good this morning due to the chill we got overnight. For instance, the water temperature at Cataloochee Creek is 57 degrees right now.
My advice today is the same as it was on this date in 2015. I don’t remember of course, so I looked at my saved copy of that report. “Fish high where the water is cooler.” Go early when the water is cooler. Use light tippet. Tie on a yellow sally stonefly imitation and drop a Green Weenie of the dry fly. You may do well using a terrestrial dry fly, maybe a foam beetle. Drop the Weenie off of that.
You could fish in the lower elevations early today but probably not tomorrow. Fish where the water temperature is in the 60’s.
Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is probably fair in the lowland rivers. Some of these rivers are flowing low. Fish in the pools and runs using a popper, foam floating fly, nymph, streamer or crayfish pattern.
I would launch on a lake at daybreak and fish the banks with a popper, foam floater, streamer or swimming nymph. As the sun rises, find shaded banks to fish. The wind will be light today.
There will be pauses in the generation at many dams today giving tailwater anglers who plan carefully a lot of choices. Fishing in a cool tailwater sounds like a good idea to me. Visit the TVA website to choose your tailwater.
I just checked the US Drought Monitor. We are not in a drought here or even abnormally dry. I am surprised. That may look different this Thursday when it is updated. Parts of Georgia and the Carolinas are in a drought.
I was off yesterday and it was chilly in the morning like it is now. I washed and dried Paula’s Outback and my 4-Runner. Then, I applied a ceramic coating to both. I use the Turtle Wax brand of ceramic. If you apply a ceramic coating, you never have to wax again. I bought my 4-Runner new, 18 months ago, and it has never been waxed. I apply the ceramic to every surface, including rubber, plastic and glass. You just wipe it on and wipe it off. The surfaces bead rain like crazy and dirt does not stick. Your vehicle is easy to wash. I love that stuff.
The South Loop of Yellowstone National Park will re-open Wednesday. The South Loop is accessed from Cody, West Yellowstone and Teton/Jackson. To limit the amount of visitors the Park is using a unique system. If your license plate ends with an odd number, you can visit the Park on odd number dates during the month. If your plate end with a zero or an even number, you can visit on even number days. The North Loop of the Park will probably not re-open this year, from what I have read.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
