Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 54.9 degrees.
It will be hot every day this week through the weekend. High temperatures will be in the low to middle 90’s with lows in the middle to upper 60’s. There is a chance for thunderstorms later this week and a higher chance this weekend.
We are again under a air quality alert due to ground level ozone.
Little River is flowing at 85.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.54 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 130 cfs. The water temperature is 65.3 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal. There are exceptions. Tellico River is one. Water temperatures are cool enough to begin fishing in the lower elevations this morning. Be prepared to move to the higher elevations as the temperatures rise to the upper 60’s. Fishing will be best in the high elevations where the water is cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs will work for you. A yellow sally stonefly dry with a Green Weenie dropper is a good combination to use. Terrestrial dry flies are also good choices. Try a foam beetle.
The water is low and the trout are spooky. Dress to blend with the forest so you are less likely to be seen by the trout. Fish the broken water in riffles, plunge pools and runs where the trout are hiding.
Lowland river fishing for bass and panfish is fair. Some rivers are flowing very low. Fish the deeper runs and pools with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
If I were lake fishing today, I would launch our boat at daybreak and fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, swimming nymphs or streamers. As the sun rises, find shaded banks to fish. When the sun becomes high, I would go home.
Fishing on a tailwater for trout and smallmouth bass will be possible this morning below most dams. You will need to check the generation schedules and work with the expected flows. The heavier prolonged generation will occur this afternoon at most dams.
I placed my weekly fly tying orders early yesterday morning. One of our fly tyer mail order customers from Alabama came in the shop later in the morning. He and his wife were here for the first time. I recognized his name that I had seen on online orders before.
They fish for 9 species of bass in their home state, in rivers. A lot of people in Alabama do. We have many customers who live in Alabama. He was looking for blue marabou, something we do not stock. I contacted Wapsi and they added two packs to the order I placed earlier.
Evidently, blue is a very popular color for bass flies. We do sell a good amount of blue foam cylinders used to make poppers. From now on, I will be stocking blue in more materials.
If Alabama bass like blue, bass in other states probably do too.
I have always found it is a good idea to listen to your customers.
