Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 61.0 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. Tomorrow will be almost the same but there is a chance for thunderstorms. Sunday will be warm again, with a high in the 80’s and a greater chance for thunderstorms. Showers are likely Monday and it will be much cooler.
Little River is flowing at 74.5 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.48 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 138 cfs. The water temperature is 69.6 degrees this morning. Yesterday, the water temperature at the low elevation gauge site in Townsend rose to over 74 degrees.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing below normal, while Tellico River is flowing right at normal this morning. Water temperatures are very warm in the low elevations. Fish in the high elevation streams where the water is cooler, in the 60’s at midday.
Trout will be hiding in broken water, and they will be spooky. Dress to blend with the forest and you will catch more. Nymphs and dry flies are working. A dry dropper rig is a good choice. Try a yellow sally stonefly imitation or a terrestrial for your dry fly. Drop a Green Weenie or small bead head nymph off your dry.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and panfish in the lowland rivers is fair and in some rivers better. The fish will be found in the deeper pools and runs. I would use a foam floating fly or a popper however nymphs, streamers and crayfish patterns may work as well.
It will be mostly sunny today so I would plan to go lake fishing early. Winds will be light today. Hit the banks and cover with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. As the sun rises, find shaded banks to fish.
We have many tailwater fishing options today. The turbines will be off or pulsing during the morning hours but running this afternoon at most dams in the area. Visit the TVA website, pick a tailwater and plan your fishing day.
The updated weekly US Drought Monitor was released yesterday. As expected, the drought out west is intense. Some areas in the Southeast are dry, especially on the Carolina coasts and parts of south central and coastal Georgia. Some areas in Tennessee are abnormally dry. East Tennessee is depicted on the map as being normal.
