Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 58.8 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today and cooler, with a high in the low to middle 80’s. Tomorrow will be a little warmer with a high in the upper 80’s. There is a chance for showers and thunderstorms tomorrow. In fact, there is a good chance for showers and thunderstorms every day, Thursday through Monday.
Little River is flowing at 93.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.58 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 115 cfs. The water temperature is 68.0 degrees this morning.
Scattered thunderstorms affected water levels in the mountains yesterday. Some streams are flowing slightly higher than normal while others are flowing at or lower than normal. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the higher elevations today where the water is cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs will catch trout. A good rig to use is a yellow sally stone dry fly with a Green Weenie dropper. Or, a terrestrial dry fly may work as well or better. Try a foam beetle. Fish the broken water in runs, riffles and plunge pools where the trout are hiding. Dress to blend with the forest to help avoid being seen by the trout. If they don’t see you, you will catch more.
Fly fishing in the lowland rivers is fair and better where the flows are higher. Smallmouth bass and panfish are actively feeding. Fish the shaded pools and runs using poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
Lake fishing will be best when the sun is off the water. Go early or late. It may be cloudy this afternoon. Winds will be light and out of the north. Watch for game fish attacking schools of shad when the light is dim. A Clouser Minnow or Puglisi Threadfin Shad pattern will work. Otherwise, cast to the banks or cover using poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs.
There are breaks in the generation planned at many dams today, giving tailwater anglers opportunities to wade or boat fish. Visit the TVA website from the links below to plan your tailwater fishing day.
July is historically a wet month due to scattered thunderstorms. The long term weather forecast looks promising over the next ten days unless there is a change in the weather pattern. It will be warmer than normal through the period. It should be wet. I hope it is wet.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
