Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 68.4 degrees.
Scattered thunderstorms moved through the area late yesterday, dropping over a quarter in of rain at our home.
Today will be partly sunny and warm, with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. We have a good chance for thunderstorms later today. Showers and thunderstorms are likely tomorrow, Sunday and Monday. Highs will be in the upper 80’s each day.
Little River is flowing at 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.61 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 118 cfs. The water temperature is 71.2 degrees at the low elevation USGS gauge site near Townsend.
Streams in the mountains are flowing below normal but those affected by scattered thunderstorms are flowing close to or at normal. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the 60’s at midday and afternoon.
Dry flies and nymphs are working. My choice would be to tie on a foam beetle or yellow sally stonefly imitations dry fly with a Green Weenie dropper.
Hike into the backcountry to find shaded streams and less people.
Lowland river fishing for warmwater or cool water species is fair. Fish in the deeper pools and runs using poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs and crayfish imitations.
The lakes are going to be crowded this holiday weekend. Go early, launch at daybreak and fish the morning hours when the sun is off the water and there is less boat traffic. Watch for game fish feeding on shad, on the surface. If you see that happening, quietly and slowly move to the school of shad and cast Clouser Minnows or Puglisi Threadfin Shad into the frenzy. Or, fish along the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, swimming nymphs or streamers. When the sun rises, find shaded banks to fish.
There are breaks in the generation scheduled this morning at most dams. There is generation planned this afternoon at many dams. If you intend to fish on a tailwater today, you have lots of choices. Check the scheduled flows on the TVA website to plan your tailwater fishing day.
A deer or more than one deer are eating our vegetable garden here at home. Paula is planning to buy two solar powered electric fence units today, to enclose the garden and hopefully put an end to the deer problem. This has never happened to her before. It is disappointing.
The indoor salad green garden is doing great. Thankfully, so far, we do not have rabbits, ground hogs, crows or deer in our basement.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
