Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 72 degrees.
It rained again at our house last night. We got .32 inches on top of the .66 inches that fell yesterday.
It will be cooler today with a high temperature in the low 80’s. We can expect scattered thunderstorms today and tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny and warmer with a high temperature in the upper 80’s.
Little River is flowing at 119 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.69 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 126 cfs. The water temperature is 71.2 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing close to normal or higher than normal but at fishable levels. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs.
We are still recommending a dry fly with a nymph or Green Weenie dropper when fishing in the mountains for trout. Good dry fly patterns to use are yellow sally stonefly imitations or floating beetles.
Most lowland rivers are flowing near normal which is fairly low. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish has improved some due to higher water levels. Fish the deeper pools and runs using poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
The lakes are packed with pleasure boaters. Two boats collided on Tellico Lake yesterday, sending two people to the hospital for treatment.
Winds will be light today. It should be overcast at times. Go lake fishing early, at daybreak, and fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. As the sun rises and if there is no cloud cover, seek shaded banks to fish. Watch for game fish feeding on shad, on the surface when the sun is low or obscured by clouds.
There will be long breaks in the generation at most dams today giving tailwater anglers many options. TVA is planning to generate at Norris Dam later this morning through early evening. You can work with that schedule by going early and choosing the right place to be that fits your schedule.
This will be a good fishing day. We will enjoy a reprieve from the heat.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
