Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 72 degrees.
Today will be cloudy early before clearing this afternoon. The high temperature will be in the middle 80’s. No rain is predicted today. Tomorrow will be hot again with a high in the low 90’s. There is a slight chance for thunderstorms tomorrow. Wednesday will be cooler. Expect a high temperature in the middle 80s and a greater chance for thunderstorms.
Little River is flowing at 336 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.36 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 130 cfs. The water temperature is 68.5 degrees this morning.
Many streams in the mountains were affected by thunderstorms yesterday. Most are flowing higher than normal this morning though they are receding. Some streams are flowing close to normal. You should be able to find fishable water. Water levels in some may be higher than anglers prefer.
Check the USGS stream gauges before you go fishing today.
Do the same if you plan to fish on a lowland rivers for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish. You will find Little Pigeon River is flowing high, at 2,910 cfs, which is a record for this date. ON the other hand, Tellico River is flowing near normal which is low.
This could be a good lake fishing day. Winds will be calm. Skies are predicted to be overcast early today. I would go early and fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. Due to the expected overcast conditions, you may find gamefish feeding on the surface attacking schools of threadfin shad. As the skies clear, it may be time to go home.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will have the turbines turned off at most dams early today allowing for tailwater wade fishing or boating. They will be generating at most dams this afternoon. Plan your tailwater fishing day by visiting the TVA website, then pick a tailwater and decide where to be and when.
We finally got some much needed rain. July has been very wet so far, with much rain more than is normal. We are all happy about that.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
