Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:56 am, the temperature is 66.2 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s with no chance for rain. Tomorrow will be almost identical to today. The weekend will be warm again, but we have a low chance for thunderstorms Saturday and a higher chance Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 176 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.91 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 137 cfs. The water temperature is 68.2 degrees this morning at the low elevation gauge site near Townsend.
Most streams in the mountains have receded to normal or higher than normal. Normal is low in mid-July. The streams will recede further today and tomorrow until Sunday, when there is a chance for more rain.
Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. A dry fly with a nymph dropper is good fly rig to use. Two very good dry flies to use are a yellow sally stonefly pattern or a foam beetle. An excellent dropper is a Green Weenie.
Lowland rivers are flowing lower today. Little Pigeon River is still flowing fairly high. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is good. Streamers, nymphs, poppers, foam floating flies and crayfish patterns are all reasonable choices.
It will be sunny today so I would go lake fishing early, at daybreak. Hit the banks and cover with poppers, foam floating flies, swimming nymphs and streamers. As the sun rises, seek shaded banks to fish. Winds will be light.
Generators at many dams will be inactive early today, but turned on later this morning or early afternoon. One exceptions is Douglas Dam where there will be generation most of the day. Another is South Holston Dam, where the water will be off with occasional pulsing until late afternoon. Tailwater anglers have many choices today whether you are wading or boating.
The long term weather forecast through July 28th indicates it will be very warm or hot through the period. However, we have a good chance for rain or scattered thunderstorms most days. July has been wetter than normal so far. At the Knoxville Airport, July rainfall is 1.52 inches higher than normal through the first 13 days. The updated US Drought Monitor will be updated later this morning. We should see improvement in parts of the Southeast and in the Southern Appalachians.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
