Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:11 am, the temperature is 62.4 degrees.
Today will be sunny and warm with a high temperature in the upper 80’s with no rain predicted. Tomorrow will be partly sunny and hot, with a high around 90 degrees and a low chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon. We have a greater chance for thunderstorms Sunday with a high in the upper 80’s.
Little River is flowing near normal at 134 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.75 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 129 cfs. The water temperature is 68.4 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains have receded to normal. Normal is low in mid-July. Little Pigeon River at the Sevierville Gauge is flowing higher than normal at 2.41 feet.
Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations and we will see warming over the next three days. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. A dry and nymph dropper rig is a good choice. Try a yellow sally stonefly or foam beetle for your dry fly, with a Green Weenie dropper. Dress to blend with the forest so you will not be easily seen by the trout. If they don’t see you, you will catch more.
Many lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains and through the valleys are flowing near normal with Little Pigeon River being an exception. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair to good. Fish the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
It will be sunny today and winds will be light. Go lake fishing early. Launch at daybreak and fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, swimming nymphs or streamers. As the sun rises, seek out shaded banks to fish.
TVA and the Corps will be generating later today at most dams. The generators will be paused or pulsing occasionally during the morning hours. There are exceptions. They will be generating all day at Douglas Dam, and not at South Holston Dam until late this afternoon. You can work with most of the generation schedules today whether you are wading or boating. Visit the TVA website to plan your tailwater fishing day.
The US Drought Monitor was updated yesterday. As expected, there has been improvement in the mountains due to the higher than normal rainfall we have had in July. You can see the updated monitor by CLICKING HERE. Click on your region, then your state for a detailed view.
The long term weather forecast indicates it will be much warmer than average through July 29th. We do have a chance for thunderstorms every day through the period. It is going to be hot, but it should be wet.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
