Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:51 am, the temperature is 72.1 degrees.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely today and tonight. Some storms will have the potential for heavy rain. The high temperature will be in the upper 80’s today. There is a lower chance for thunderstorms tomorrow with a high in the middle 80’s.
Little River is flowing at 129 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.73 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 114 cfs. The water temperature is 70.2 degrees at the low elevation gauge site near Townsend.
Some streams in the mountains are flowing at normal, while others are flowing slightly above normal or slightly below normal. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs.
Most lowland rivers are flowing low though some are flowing higher than normal. Normal in mid-July is low. Fly fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is probably fair .Cast into the deep pools and runs with poppers or foam floating flies. If they are not working, switch to nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
This should be a fair to good lake fishing day. It will be overcast. It will be a little breezy. And, there is a high chance for thunderstorms. Some storms may become strong to marginally severe. The more I think about it, this may not be a good lake fishing day. I believe I would sit this one out.
There are some tailwater fishing options today. For the most part, TVA and the Corps will not be generating this morning at most dams, but they will turn on the turbines this afternoon. One exception is Norris Dam, where they will be generating early this morning and through the day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
