Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:18 am, the temperature is 71.6 degrees.
A large powerful thunderstorms is pounding us here at home this morning. Over an inch of rain has fallen so far in this storm at a personal weather station near our home. We can expect more storms to pass through until later this morning. Flash flooding is possible. Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the upper 80’s.
Tomorrow and through the weekend will be hot, with highs in the 90’s.
Little River is flowing at 117 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.68 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 123 cfs. The water temperature is 72.5 degrees this morning. Little River is rising quickly.
Other streams in the mountains have not been affected by these storms yet. Most are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the high elevations where the water is cooler. You may encounter high and stained water today. Flash flooding is a concern.
Lowland rivers are flowing low at this point. That may change later, depending on the path of these storms and which river you intend to fish.
If you are planning to fish on a lake today, you may want to wait a while. It will be overcast today so going early is not something you have to do. I would not want to be in our boat on a lake in this storm. Watch the weather websites and radar before making a decision to go. Storms today may contain strong gusty winds.
There are some generation schedules you can work with today. Check the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are. In most cases, you will find periods of no generation except pulsing in the morning, with the generators turned on this afternoon.
I checked the Little River gauge again. Now, the river is flowing at 1.88 feet and rising quickly. Little Pigeon River is rising fast. It was not rising earlier when I looked. The same is true at the West Prong of the Little Pigeon gauge near Gatlinburg. I still hear thunder and rain. Now, we have had right at 1.5 inches of rain near our house.
We’ll see what happens.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
